1966: Simon & Garfunkel on Canadian TV

When ‘ The sound of silence’  was still high up in the charts, early 1966, Simon & Garfunkel were invited to a Canadian TV Show called ‘ Let’s sing out’.

According to the site: ‘ Originating from university campuses all across Canada, Let’s Sing Out featured audience participation as students joined Canadian and American guest stars in familiar and popular folk songs. The weekly half-hour series was seen on Fridays throughout the CTV network, beginning October 11, 1963. Host for the show was Winnipeg-born Oscar Brand.  The series aired on CTV until it was picked up by the CBC in the fall of 1966 and ran for one more season.’

Simon and Garfunkel were seen in two episodes:

1966-02-17 – Let’s sing out – Toronto, University College, University of Toronto, Simon and Garfunkel, Sharon Trostin and Steve Jorgunsen
1966-03-24 – Let’s sing out – Toronto, University College, University of Toronto, Simon and Garfunkel, Mark Spoelstra and Zaharia join Oscar Brand.

See YouTube for some very nice footage (but I am not sure from which ‘ Let’s sing out’  episodes these come, maybe the March episode had material which was left of the first). Enjoy them while you can!

  1. I was at the performance at UC with “sounds of silence” hosted by Oscar Brand but unable to identify the other two performers on stage – Sharon Trostin and Steve Jorgunsen or Mark Spoelstra and Zaharia. I have my photograph taken of the five either Feb. 17 or March 24 1966. Can you identify the other two?
